Start & Completion

December 2015

Duration

68 Weeks

A 68-week programme saw Styles&Wood refurbish and modernise the 14,500ft2 library facilities at Lancaster University incorporating an open plan library area, formal and informal study spaces, resources points, teaching space and group study rooms.

The positioning of a glass roof over the existing external courtyard created an atrium, where a 6 meter Ficus tree, installed with a drainage system and a specialist lighting system to keep the tree alive, provided the main focal point.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

Split into six phases enabled the library to keep areas operational throughout duration. Acoustic fire rated hoarding kept construction noise to a minimum.

Acoustic rated rafts above the open plan seating areas and acoustic rated walls and glazing enhanced the acoustic performance of the building, while window replacement glazing helped to achieve high energy efficiency ratings.

The library ranked joint first in the Student experience survey at The World University Ranking 2017.

The project was delivered on time and is on target to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Anna Cockman, Senior Project Manager

“I would like to thank you all very much for the tremendous effort and hard work which has been invested in the project to produce a wonderful new library facility for the university. The response from management, the staff and students alike has been overwhelmingly positive and i hope that you are all very proud of what you have collectively achieved.”
