A group of final year Construction Management BSc students from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) recently visited Liverpool’s iconic India Buildings, for a guided tour of the £38 million refurbishment by property and construction specialists Styles&Wood.
The soon-to-be graduates were given a talk explaining the current development and the site’s history, and gained first-hand insight into a live build, helping them understand how to apply the skills they have gained throughout their studies to a real-life construction project.
The field trip was organised by Sian Dunne, senior lecturer at the Department of the Built Environment at LJMU, as part of the programme’s Construction Technology and Refurbishment module.
Commenting on the visit, Sian Dunne said:
Exposing students to a real-life build is something a lecture can’t compete with. At LJMU we place a high value on hands-on projects to allow students to have already developed first-hand industry experience upon their graduation. We’ve worked with various companies in the past and Styles&Wood is the latest company to support our students. It’s great to see how enthusiastic local businesses are about working alongside the university and its students.

Styles&Wood was awarded the contract to refurbish the iconic Grade II listed building by Shelborn Asset Management earlier this year. The works include a Category A fit out, which involves major refurbishment including the provision of office space, remedial works and major external repairs.
Completion is expected in August 2019, when the building will be leased back to HMRC for use as a regional ‘supercentre’.
