On Friday 16th May Styles&Wood took part in Give and Gain Day, the UKs only national day of employee volunteering. The SWiTC team, working with Thrive Trafford, who deliver support to local organisations, charities and communities in Trafford, found an opportunity to get involved with Red Rose Forest, a local organisation who maintains the areas of woodland in and around Greater Manchester.
The event took place at Urmston Meadows, a woodland area near the River Mersey. Styles&Wood joined many companies taking part such as DWF, Bruntwood, Trafford Housing Trust, The University of Manchester and Sainsburys.
In total 14 colleagues from across our business took part on the day. ‘Balsam bashing’ was the first task of the day which involved pulling up patches of Himalayan Balsam, a foreign plant which grows quickly. The second task was cutting down young Norway Maple Trees, which were removed to provide more light to the woodland floor.
Everyone who took part had a great time;
Paul Lonsdale, Operations Director commented “The day was a great opportunity to meet some different colleagues from our business and by working together we could see the impact we had on helping manage the meadows.”
Bianca Reda, Retail Space Designer commented “The activities were fun and the weather was lovely! I enjoyed learning about the Red Rose Forest and finding out why our volunteering helps so much. I would definitely do something like this again!”
We also received comments from Aine Graven at Thrive Trafford who help organise the event “A big thank you to Styles&Wood for all your efforts on Friday. No amount of nettles seemed to get in your way and the Meadows are looking much better for all your efforts.”
Mike Savage from Red Rose Forest commented saying “Urmston Meadows is a fantastic resource but like many other countryside sites needs some TLC to make the most of it for people and wildlife. The hard work that all the Styles&Wood employees have done today makes an enormous difference and is a great start to the improvements to the site we hope to achieve in the future. And hopefully more businesses will want to get involved with our Partnership and their local countryside.”
Give and Gain day is sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group, Waitrose, Society Recruitment and in association with BT and ITV. Employee participation was encouraged from companies throughout the UK.
Styles&Wood offers its employees the chance to give back to the community by providing two days of volunteering, offering colleagues the chance to learn new skills, meet other people within the business and make a difference to the local community or project.
